FILM POSTER
Using text and imagery, students were asked to create a 27” x 40” film poster for the assigned documentary, “Fracking The System:Colorado’s Oil and Gas Wars.” Goals for this assignment included understanding the film at task, working with a client, and designing on a larger scale.
CONCEPT & TASK
The concept of this poster design was to highlight fracking toxins that are invisible to the eye by using a thermal camera imaging over a part of the photo.
PROGRAMS USED: Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
PROCESS
The initial draft was not an accurate representation of proper fracking equipment and the color of the FLIR camera effect was much too saturated for my vision.
In the second iteration before the final, I chose to contrast the realistic perspective next to the camera lense view. I also changed the effect to a black and white point of view to maintain a lighter color palette. While close to the final design, there were still legibility issues with the text against the image.
Challenges included researching the proper terminology, equipment, and types of thermal imaging, which were all essential variables to acheiving a factual poster. As mentioned previously, another difficult aspect was positioning the text in a way that was legible and utilized areas of the poster that could afford to be covered.
CHALLENGE & TRIUMPH
After extensive research and viewings of the film, I was able to understand for example what color the camera would identify the pollution with. Additionally, the image used in the final design was pulled directly from the film with the director’s approval, which ensured for an accurate representation.
